2009 was an amazing (definition 1 in any dictionary you look in) year for me. It started off with such an easily remembered occurrence that I am, for the first time I can think of, able to look at the year as a single unit of time. I'd like to share with you all what the goings on were.
1. Entered the new year inebriated.
2. Shortly after that I left to the other side of Earth with my parents. I've been in China. I've been in Malaysia. I've flown over Alaska and Russia and Vietnam. I walked very drunkenly and very lostily through some streets in Kuala Lumpur with a very nice Englishman I had met that same night (that sounds sexual, but I assure you it was not). I did a lot of things and learned even more while I was there, and as long as I'm able, I won't forget that trip.
3. Came into school a couple of weeks late. I was really unhappy with the program I was in, and a few professors took it upon themselves to show me that I would be welcomed and challenged in the Studio Art program. After weeks of battling the idea, I made the decision to add on a year and a half of class work. Worked my ass off that semester to absorb everything I could.
4. Took part in my sister Eileen's wedding as a groomsman to Mike. It was a really nice service and the newlyweds seemed really happy. I got to see my niece Sarah, which is always awesome. I also scared the bejesus (what's the spelling on that?) out of an 18 year old female's mother.
5. I bitched and moaned about the Valley some more and its lack of art and culture. Tom and Donna (Art Professors) invited me to go with them to Philadelphia to see some real deal museums and immerse myself in a different environment for a couple of weeks. I dropped the minimester drawing 3 class and spent everything I had saved up to make the trip and I am very happy that I did. I came back from those museum visits and nice conversations and walking and eating and drawing and and and with a new appreciation for myself as a creative being.
5 1/2. Started working my ass off in any free time that I had on an iPhone app with Patrick.
6. Started summer session 1 in Jewelry Making.
7. Got rear ended by a dumb bitch on a cell phone.
8. Some rehab on my neck while going through the Jewelry class (which was really good and very time consuming)
9. Took ceramics. Ceramics was neat, but I think I was hoping to use the wheel more than anything, and that didn't happen at all.
10. Started working with a model after a year and a half of searching.
11. Finished and released iTriv for the iPhone.
12. After a week or a week and a half of a break I started the Fall semester. This was my first semester as a real art studio major. I spent most of my days at school. From early in the day to very late at night. Most of the students let me down, but the professors pushed me in a great direction. At times I felt a little spread thin, but the semester was full and good, and I learned a great deal.
13. Painting, drawing, reading, photos, painting, reading, painting, drawing, reading, painting, drawing, reading, painting, painting..
14. Although it hasn't happened yet; if I can make it to the new year, I plan on leaving this one inebriated.
This was a packed year. Reallllly packed. I can't actually believe it all fit into a single year. Next year should be packed as well.
If the college gods be willing I'll be graduating in December. I'll be at school almost constantly and working my ass off on new pieces. I don't have anything in my life right now as a distraction from school. I don't have a band to play with. I don't have a girlfriend to love and hate. I have my education to nurture and expand, and I see heart in this path. I'm not sure where it will take me, but I'll be sending out a number of very expensive grad school applications at the end of next year and hopefully someone will want me to go experience something new somewhere new.
Dear Valley,
I am surrounded by you, but I do not feel like I belong with you. This isn't a judgment I'm holding on you Valley, it's just an observation. The people are dirty (this is a judgment) and the place is dirty, and it really doesn't fit in with the kind of life I would like to live. 2009 was a tough year for some of you out there, and unless you brought it out on yourselves, I feel for you. I have some great friends down here, and that will no doubt be tested during this year coming up seeing as how busy I will be with school school school. I'll talk with some of you less and some of you more. My point is: The people who really want to stick with me will, and I'll be grateful for that. I can't stay here much longer, and for some reason, that scares me.
Everyone please have a happy entering of the New Decade. I would like you all to be happier than you pretend to be.
